A conservatory’s multi-media and stage complex occupies a site in the immediate vicinity of a historic “maison de plaisance” that was reconstructed in the 1980s. The building is arranged in two parts. First, a large, mostly windowless box borders the new square to the north and contains a performance hall seating an audience of more than 400, rehearsal spaces, and a foyer. The entrance to it is set back considerably from the facade’s plane, giving the building massing a sense of depth; the oblique “reveal” accompanying the entrance directs the attention of persons in the foyer to the pleasure palace.
